Valheim Mead Guide: Every Mead and When You Need It

Meads are Valheim’s potions, and two of them are not optional. Turning up to certain fights and biomes without the right mead is the difference between a hard afternoon and a pile of gravestones.

How brewing works

  1. Build a fermenter and a cauldron.
  2. Make a mead base at the cauldron from honey plus ingredients.
  3. Put the base in the fermenter and wait. It takes real time, so brew ahead.
  4. Collect six of the finished mead.

The mandatory ones

  • Poison resistance. Required for the Swamp and effectively required for Bonemass. Nothing else in the game makes such a difference.
  • Frost resistance. Required for the Mountains until you have a wolf fur cape. Freezing ignores armour.

The useful ones

  • Minor and medium healing. Instant health in a fight. Worth carrying for bosses.
  • Stamina mead. For long climbs, swims and chases.
  • Fire resistance. For the Ashlands and certain fights.
  • Tasty mead. Restores a little health over time, cheap filler.

What to keep stocked

A sensible standing stock is six poison, six frost and a few healing at all times. Honey is renewable from hives at your base, so once you are set up the ingredients cost you almost nothing but time.

Pair this with the food guide and you will stop dying to things that are not actually fights.
