Valheim Swamp Guide: Iron, Crypts and Staying Alive

The Swamp is where Valheim stops being gentle. It is dark, permanently wet, full of things that poison you, and it is also the only place to get iron. You cannot skip it.

Why it is so much harder

Three things stack against you at once. You are always wet, which blocks natural health regeneration and stops you resting. Almost everything does poison damage. And the terrain is open water and roots, so you get swarmed while you are slowed down.

Draugr. The staple swamp enemy, and they hit far harder than anything in the Black Forest.

Getting iron

Iron does not come out of rocks here. It comes from muddy scrap piles inside sunken crypts, the stone buildings dotted through the swamp. Your swamp key opens them.

  1. Find a sunken crypt and unlock it with the key from The Elder.
  2. Inside, look for muddy scrap piles on the floor. Dig them out with a pickaxe.
  3. Each pile gives several IronIron scrap plus the odd Withered boneWithered bone.
  4. Smelt the scrap at home to get iron bars.

What wants to kill you

  • Draugr, the standard enemy. They hit hard and come in groups.
  • Blobs and oozers, which explode into poison. Kill them at range if you can.
  • Leeches, in the water, which poison you while you are already slowed.
  • Surtlings, near fire geysers. They drop Surtling coreSurtling core and they are weak to water, so lure them into it.

The tactic that works

Fight on solid ground, never in water. Clear a crypt entrance, build a small fire and workbench outside it, and use that as your base for the trip. Dry off, repair, and haul scrap back to it rather than carrying everything at once.

When you have iron gear and poison mead, go and deal with Bonemass. Good luck out there.
